Social conditioning - How to think for yourself

All of us have thoughts, and throughout life, we have formed some opinions. You can’t help but wonder, how many of those beliefs are based on our understanding and how many are results from social conditioning? You might know a lot of things, but some of those things are from your personal experience, while others come from parrot-like learning. The problem is that critical thinking isn’t stimulated, and it’s that way even when we are going to school.

Some people never wonder is what the media is telling them actually the truth. And what’s the result of this social conditioning? We have emotional insecurities, and corporations exploit them to sell us services and products. The media that I mentioned earlier uses propaganda tactics to unable us from thinking with our own minds.

Are you ready to start thinking for yourself? Do you have the courage to escape the mentality of the herd? Social conditioning goes very deep, and it won’t be easy, but there are things that you can do about it right now! Let’s look at what they are.

  1. Start questioning your beliefs

You unconsciously took on some belief from your culture, parents, and teachers. No matter how much you feel like you cherish them, it’s time for you to question your beliefs. After all, they could bring limitations in your life. Maybe you have irrational fears because of them, or you try to live a life according to what others think is right, never getting the chance to think about what you think is right. Think about your beliefs and ask yourself a few questions. Where do they come from? Are there logical reasons for holding them? Is it improving your life, or is it limiting yourself? Don’t be afraid to question all of your beliefs. A sign of intelligence is when you doubt what you think you already know. Only those who have courage can free themselves from social conditioning and become wise.

  1. Accept responsibility for your life

Hasn’t it become a habit of ours to have others tell us how to behave and what to think? Unfortunately, we rarely think for ourselves. Why do we let others do the thinking for us? We let them take responsibility for our lives. So why do we do that? Why do we let others dictate us how we should live our lives? It’s because we don’t want the burden of responsibility. We throw it on them so we wouldn’t have to feel the weight of it on our own shoulders. Taking responsibility isn’t easy because it means that you must use your own mind and make decisions that will sometimes result in failure. We want to avoid that failure, so we let others think for us. We let our politicians take responsibility for us, and we then blame them for all the things that are wrong in our lives. You can reclaim your freedom by not letting others control you. Start taking responsibility for your actions.

  1. Always seek the truth

Have you questioned your beliefs yet? Well, if you have, you’ve probably realized that a lot of them were imposed on you by society. Many of them don’t really reflect your own understanding and personal experience. You have developed critical thinking, but the real question is, are those beliefs true or not? Seek truth by doing research. For example, didn’t you think that taking drugs causes addiction? Well, it turns out that taking drugs is just a symptom of addiction that is caused by emotional trauma. The same goes for other addictions besides drugs, such as video games, pornography, and gambling. The big problem is that people don’t really do any research before creating a belief. They just pass it on to one another without ever stopping to check the facts. Research seems not worth it, and it’s exhausting, but that’s not the main problem. The main problem is that research is threatening to the worldview we have at the moment. When you don’t base your beliefs on scientific understanding and critical thinking, the research could prove you wrong, so you choose not to find out the truth to preserve those beliefs at any cost. Still, you’ll never grow wiser if you keep living in ignorance. What’s more, you’re unconsciously spreading untruths. If you seek wisdom, you have to seek the truth, regardless of how difficult it is. Educate yourself and think with your own head. So, what if you encounter the truth that contradicts the beliefs that you had for years? You have to be ready to accept it. It’s the only way to be free. You’ll need to watch documentaries, read books, take part in meaningful discussions, and listen to talks. Use any tool that can help you expand your understanding of reality. Don’t forget that you are what you believe. So, don’t let society make you believe you’re something you’re not.
