We live in a day and age where we have access to an abundance of information at our fingertips, yet at the same time, we fail to have a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Having a deeper understanding of our emotions, perspectives and actions can greatly improve our lives in a number of different ways.

One way of improving ourselves is to embark on a journey of self-mastery.

But what is self-mastery and how can one achieve it? Let’s find out.

What is self-mastery?

As the word suggests self-mastery is related to having complete control over our own perspectives, actions, and decisions. Having a strong grip on how your mind thinks allows you to shape your life, instead of it being impacted by the surrounding environment.

Similarly, self-mastery enables you to respond to situations instead of reacting to them. Quite a lot of times we regret what we said or did when we were overcome by emotions, but being in control of how you feel or what triggers you can greatly reduce such instances from happening.

Benefits of Self-Mastery

Through overcoming impulsion and self-awareness, you are now capable of bringing more discipline in your life. As we all know, discipline and persistence are often regarded as one of the most essential traits necessary to achieve any goal. It is these traits that enable us to not quit and give up when things start getting tough.

Additionally, self-mastery is based on self-knowledge. By going through this process, you can easily identify your principles and purpose. Knowing your purpose in life leads to more content and focused life and it empowers you to achieve more for yourself, for your loved ones, and also for the betterment of the community.

How to achieve self-mastery

The journey of self-mastery may not be as daunting as it sounds.

Dealing with your thoughts

The first thing you should start with is self-awareness. One of the methods of being self-aware of our thoughts is to practice mindfulness meditation. This is a pretty handy method to recognize your thought patterns and how your beliefs are interlinked.

Once you have recognized your various thoughts, it is important to understand where they are coming from and what is your rationality behind them. This then assists us in reframing our perspectives if we have recognized some negative ones that have been holding us back. Reframing our thoughts has the potential of completely shifting a scenario in our minds, and with this comes the willingness to change a situation through our actions as well.

A beneficial way of practicing is to experiment. Experimenting with different things, exploring different ideas, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is an amazing way to broaden your perspectives.

Dealing with your emotions

In order to develop a better grip over your emotions, you should try developing emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is characterized as the ability to manage and understand the emotions of not only ourselves but also others. Being emotionally intelligent makes us capable of empathizing with others and manage relationships efficiently.

It is also essential not to resist your emotions when developing self-mastery. Don’t get me wrong, we do not mean to let your emotions take over, but to acknowledge, communicate and channel them in the right direction. This is important because holding back emotions over time causes us to explode sooner or later.

People who have high emotional intelligence have reported better performance at work, improved mental health, and better leadership skills. This is why mastering your emotions is a necessary step to mastering yourself.

Eliminate negative behavior

You must also deal with the negative behavior that pushes us back on our journey to self-mastery. Recognizing negative behavior is easy when you have already understood your perspectives and emotions.

Be quick in detecting triggers that cause you to fall back, and develop proper action plans to deal with those situations. For instance, if procrastination holds you back, then you must have proper motivation to make yourself more active and have a tangible goal in sight that will push you to take action. This is why we always recommend having both rational and emotional motives of overpowering your negative habits.

Become pro-active

Finally, you should learn to become proactive and to take initiative. You won’t be able to achieve mastery if you take a passive approach to your own life. Once you have acknowledged the areas of development and improvement, follow through with adequate action and don’t hesitate.

Stick with your plans and allocate daily time to reflect on your day and to plan. Keeping a journal to write down your train of thoughts and progress can be an amazing aid as well. Put in the effort and stay persistent, as, at the end of the day, no one is more responsible for your success and peace than you are.
