The Concept of Work-Life Balance

It is somewhat related to weekends. How? During the industrial revolution back in the 1800s, workers got a day off for one day when they would take proper rest. Over time it stretched to two days weekend. Weekends were given to the workers so that they rest well, get energized, and kick off the following week with more enthusiasm.

The problem is, in this era of technology we are still getting these weekends but we are still working in one way or another. Through the development of technology, we are connected to each other throughout the day, wherever we are. As a result, even if we are not physically present at work, we can still work remotely.

Therefore, you might be seen checking work emails during weekends, date nights, or family dinners. So, are you even resting? You are still working even if you are off work. Is this behavior causing you any type of problems in your personal life? It is, most certainly. What’s your take on this matter? Do you want to keep on leading a life with an imbalance in work-life? Do you enjoy having conflicts just because you are working when you are not supposed to? Believe us, you and your family both deserve a well-balanced life.

Work-Life Balance In Management

There is a concept in Management Studies called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. There Maslow tried to explain what are your needs through a structured pyramid. You need to analyze that pyramid well if you want to maintain the equilibrium between your career and personal life.

As per the pyramid, Maslow explained that initially, you will require all your basic needs to be fulfilled such as food, shelter, treatment, sleep, rest, etc. If all these get fulfilled, then you will pursue more needs to be satisfied chronologically: security, affection, self-esteem, and self-actualization.

In this pyramid, Maslow thought of all sorts of possible needs you may have, and that certainly seeks to retain the work-life balance. Having said that work-life balance is a need now let’s have a look at the ways you can achieve the ideal work-life balance!

Let’s Balance Work and Personal Life

You will be very surprised to read that it won’t require you much effort to balance your career and personal life. Just a few steps and you will be good to go!

Step 1 - Journal it

Maintain a journal and write down the time table of the hours you work, do chores, fun activities, spend on social media, and so on. From this, you can have a hold of the number of hours you have as leisure and the work time. You will be glad to see that you have a huge amount of time in hand to spend on leisure activities.

Step 2 - Pin it

Now you know the amount of time you have in hand for each of the activities, in simpler terms- you know where you are at this point. Now you need to figure out where you want to stand with this. In that case, divide your hours into multiple sections.

For instance, you want to spend 8 hours at work, 8 hours in bed, 2 hours in cooking and cleaning, 2 hours on Netflix and social media, 2 hours in reading and eating, and lastly two hours of me-time. These sections may vary but have a look at the time you are getting for so many things once you are writing them down.

Have a list for the weekend too. Make sure you don’t take any sort of work unless it’s an emergency.

Step 3 - Fix it

Now that you know where you want to reach from, just start making changes according to that. Make sure you are sticking to the sections and timelines you have fixed. Also, make sure you are not even checking work emails during weekends. Ask family members to help you out in your plans or hire assistance if you want to save more time and simultaneously if you can afford that.

Last Words

If you really want to make this thing work then believe in yourself that you can. If you have reached this far then we are already convinced that you really want to make this work for yourself and your loved ones. We believe in you. You can do this!
