Did you know that being overweight is marked abnormal by the World Health Organization? Yes. If your BMI (Body Mass Index) is equal to or more than 30, then you are officially abnormal to the eyes of the world health organization. Being excessively fat, a label of abnormal is not the only thing you have to worry about. There are health diseases, social life costs, and more big things that will need your concern. This not only includes mental problems but also high financial costs as well.

Health Costs

Let’s begin with the cost of your health. Because it is the most valuable thing anyone possesses. Being overweight, you need to prepare yourself for many probable health problems that will cost a loss of money for treatment. If your BMI is above 30, there is a high chance that you will suffer from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. All of these diseases have a high financial cost and can be life-threatening if not properly treated.

Diabetes

Diabetes can be treated with insulin that has a reasonable cost. But overweight people tend to suffer from type 2 diabetes, which cannot be treated with insulin. As a result, type 2 diabetes needs treatment in a hospital and the estimated cost of treating type 2 diabetes in the US is $13,700.

Heart Disease

Being overweight means having a rich amount of cholesterol and fat elements in your blood. The heart has to deal with this excessive amount of cholesterol all the time. Too much cholesterol can easily block a blood vein. If it is far from the heart, it would not create many problems. But if the cholesterols block a vein in the heart, it can cause many heart diseases including stroke. And the average cost of treating any kind of heart disease is anywhere near $200,000

High Blood Pressure

Another critical health condition caused by obesity is high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause other health problems like heart failure, stroke, and ultimately death. It is a serious condition that cannot be ignored. The cost of its treatment is near $2000. But it can cost more if you delay treatment. Health problems and their costs aren’t the only things you have to worry about. Your social life and relationships will be in big trouble too.

Social cost

Losing your job

It may sound unethical/ inhuman to fire an employee because of their physical condition. You may think of visiting the court about it but guess what. Firing an employee because of obesity is now legal in 49 states. Yes, it’s true. We cannot tell why. If your country is one of those states, then you are in big trouble. Because you may get fired but there aren’t any other jobs that will hire someone obese. If you don’t have a job, you won’t be able to pay your bills for electricity, internet, treatments and all other things. You will go into debt and it can come back as double the trouble you begin with.

High insurance cost

It may seem unfair but it is true. People who participate in fitness and weight loss programs get discounts from insurance firms. Plus they get many gift cards and more incentives. But for overweight people the scenario is different. Your insurance firm will charge you higher rates if your BMI is higher. They can even push you to their own fitness program and charge money.

Cost of extra-sized clothes

If you look at the values of plus size clothes on any store, brand, or nonbrand, you will see that on average the plus size clothes cost 25% more. You may overlook this difference when shopping for just one piece of jeans or tops. But imagine how much extra you have to pay when shopping for clothes for a season. What would you buy? Let’s assume that you purchased a pair of jeans and a pair of tops, all plus-sized. Plus size clothes cost 25% more on average. So (25X4)% is equal to 100%. That means you are paying for five pieces of clothes to get 4 pieces of them. The more you buy, the more extra you have to pay.

Expensive and uncomfortable spa experience

Can you imagine that something as relaxing as a spa can be uncomfortable? Unfortunately, it is true for overweight people. Spa charges extra for overweight clients and sometimes rejects them. That’s because the spa may not have a bench strong enough to hold the weight. Even if they can hold the weight, it will cost double for enough room. There are also the expenses of extra supplies of wax and imagine how much the clients may charge for lifting your overweight legs. Some spas may not have robes big enough for the person to wear. This will put them in a very uncomfortable position and their spa will be nowhere close to relaxing.

Airline expenses

Can you imagine someone getting banned from a flight because of obesity? It’s true. That’s because the airline’s seat has some safety features like seatbelts and airbags that will fail to save overweight passengers. Even if they are not banned, they may have to pay double for a second seat for themselves or upgrade to the wider class seats. Either way, it will cost more than average.

Conclusion

These were some of the high costs of being overweight. Statistics have shown that the obesity rate has dramatically increased in the US, especially in the pandemic. If you don’t want to face the consequences of being overweight mentioned above, we suggest you start doing some freehand exercises at home.
