Embrace Change

‘Change is constant’ is one of the most clichéd quotes any human will hear throughout their lifetime. But the truth is that some of the most overused quotes carry the most power and truism with them. The concept of change is a universal and natural one. Everything that exists is constantly undergoing one form of change or the other. It is impossible to hide from it. Change is necessary for growth in living organisms including humans. This growth transcends the physiological and extends to financial, spiritual or mental. Change helps us move out of our comfort zone and experience life in a totally new and different way.

If change is so important and unavoidable, why then is the average human so afraid of it. The major reason is that change tampers with comfort. Change comes with adjustments that can be stressful. On the other hand, people detest change especially when it comes to them without their own input. People may sometimes be receptive to change when it is the type they can control. Sadly, most of the changes we experience in life are those that are caused by circumstances beyond our control. Seeking to always be at the wheel to stir incoming change will mostly lead to destruction.

The average human response to change is to buckle up and try to shield themselves from its impact. This is something that happens unconsciously, with some of its visible effects being anxiety, depression or worry. None of these manifestations are palatable, and this is why it is best to stay open to change and not challenge it. If the change process is handled thoughtfully, there can be a lot of benefits to reap. When this kind of mindset is adopted, the transition from one level to another during change takes place seamlessly.

The change process is also a transition process. Most of the time, we are never aware of the end product of this transition which makes change even scarier. Mastering the basic phases of the transition process helps one manage the uncertainties they will come across along the way. The Bridges Transition Model outlines three major phases experienced by an individual during change. These are the Ending What Currently Is, The Neutral Phase and The New Beginning.

The beginning of the change process is the end of one phase – for example, a phase in career path or relationship status. Change not only disrupts former patterns; it is also capable of halting them entirely. This can lead to rising emotions and a feeling of confusion.

Then comes the Neutral Phase which is sandwiched between the unreleased past and the incoming future. A lot of mental and psychological restructuring takes place during this time. This is the core of the change process, because if anything goes wrong during this phase the individual may begin to seek a return to their former reality.

The new beginning is a phase of freshness and revitalized zest for life. During this phase, all of the little components that make up the overall change process begin to come together to provide a beautiful picture of satisfaction. At the end of this phase, one can tell how well they have adapted to the change and if there is any extra work that needs to be done.

Embracing change means learning how to navigate it, and there is no better way to do this than to talk to someone who has gone ahead of you in whatever sector of your life that change is about to occur. You can call them a mentor or a coach. Having these people in your life makes it easier to go through change. They are apt at identifying mental blockades preventing you from embracing change and they can help you break them. If you lack the financial strength to accommodate the services of a professional coach, you can join a group of people in your field who are open to experience change.

Change can hit like a bombshell and produce an array of reactions. Don’t be a first responder to change. Relax and watch things unfold for a while. Clear your head by going for a walk, talking to somebody or taking a vacation. This period should be used to weigh the pros and cons of the incoming change to figure out ways to adjust yourself for it.

Ignorance on the subject matter can lead to panic and resistance to change. If you continue to gather knowledge and keep track of new developments in any given field, change in such a field won’t be too much to handle. Change majorly comes as a shock to people who have decided to stop learning and remain narrow-minded. Understand that any change process is an adventure that will lead to discoveries that can astound you.

If you force yourself to remain in one position while resisting transition, the world will leave you behind. The world itself is continuously undergoing change so it is only sensible that its inhabitants keep an open mind and embrace this change.
