Darryl Bachmeier Aug 20, 2019 Life

Sacrifice. A 9-lettered word most of us are familiar with, though in almost every case, not in a good way. The thing about sacrifice is that it’s never pleasant. When it comes to sacrifice, it’s always about trade-offs, something that you’re having to let go of for something else. What often breaks people is the dilemma of choice that comes with it. It’s never as easy as choosing one thing over the other. With a choice comes a whole lot of self-imposed pressure as to whether the choice was right, the trade-off worth it, and the sacrifice count? One of the most common sacrificial dilemmas comes in the form of whether to choose between a career or family. Some people might say there should be no trade-off with a career and others might say the prospect of a career, the process of polishing the resume is just ticking away the...

Understanding the Wellness Continuum

Darryl Bachmeier Aug 17, 2019 Body

When we talk about wellness, people usually relate it to absence or recovery from illness. However, according to researchers, there are varying degrees of wellness just like varying degrees of illness. To further describe the health status of a person, they illustrate an Illness/Wellness Continuum by relating the treatment paradigm with the wellness paradigm. In this continuum, they demonstrate how the health status of a person progresses while moving from left to right. Starting from left to the center of the continuum indicates the treatment paradigm of an individual. While from the center to the right of the continuum, it indicates the wellness paradigm. When we need to estimate the degree of wellness of an individual, we consider the left-most part of the treatment paradigm as an indication of disease or premature death. And when we move towards the center, it’s considered as the neutral point or elimination of the...

Ways to Use Socratic Questioning to Improve your Conversations

Darryl Bachmeier Aug 16, 2019 Social

The Socratic question (sometimes referred to as the Socratic Method) involves a decent and thoughtful conversation between two or more individuals. By using consistently focused and open-ended questions, we can open our trust and the confidence of others. In education, we can remove the concept of ‘sage on the stage’ even if it is temporary. Instead, the teacher pretends to be dumb and acts ignorant of the matter. The student, rather than being inactive, actively helps to push the conversation forward. Rather than teaching in the usual sense, the lesson is not planned, often without a pre-defined goal; Conversation can go its own way and is open to the teacher and students. How to ask the Socratic questions? Using the Socratic Question is a useful conversation shared between the teacher and the student, or the therapist and the client. According to Professor Rob Reich, the ideal environment is one of...
